Ever since the San Diego Padres relieved Josh Byrnes of his duties as the team's general manager on June 23, they have been searching for a successor.
While former Mets general manager and current team executive Omar Minaya is running the baseball operations on an interim basis (he is not in the running for the job), the team had four potential candidates for the job: Boston Red Sox assistant GM Mike Hazen, Texas Rangers assistant GM A.J. Preller, MLB executive Kim Ng and New York Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler.
Jim Bowden of ESPN and former Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals GM reported that Eppler and Preller are currently in the lead for the job.
According to sources Billy Eppler and AJ Preller have moved into the lead to be next GM of Padres according to league source— JIM BOWDEN (@JimBowdenESPNxm) July 20, 2014
Eppler has ties with San Diego, as he was once a scout for the Padres from 2000-2004 before being hired as a scout for the Yankees in 2005. Brian Cashman then promoted Eppler to assistant general manager in the winter of 2011, which is where he has been since.
Cashman is in the final year of his contract with the Yankees and some have wondered that if Cashman were to leave the team or take a promotion with the Yankees, Eppler could be his successor for the GM position, but not if the Padres end up hiring Eppler to run their team first.
