The New York Yankees may need some help in a few areas, but it's perfectly clear this team is focusing most on starting pitching while everything else is taking a back seat.
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark held a live chat on Friday and was asked whether or not the Yankees are looking at options for third base. Stark was rather definitive in his answer to that question:
Question: Everyone talks about the Yanks needing an SP but don't you think they could use help @ 3B? Who do u think would b available?
Stark's Answer: Haven't gotten any indication they're shopping for a 3B. They're all about adding starting pitching first and everything else second.
The Yanks potential need for a third baseman is apparent. Rookie Yangervis Solarte started off on fire out of the gates in 2014, but he's cooled off significantly and has fallen off the face of the earth since.
If Solarte's struggles continue, the Yanks can go to Kelly Johnson, who is hitting a miserable .229.
Despite that harsh reality, that position still isn't anywhere near as important as starting pitching for the Yanks. After all, championships are won with great pitching and New York's just isn't sufficient at the moment.
Vidal Nuno and David Phelps have done a serviceable job while filling in for the injured Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova; however they are far too inconsistent and unpredictable to get the Bronx Bombers to October.
Chase Whitley has done an even better job than Nuno and Phelps, but he's coming off a start in which he allowed eight runs, so the jury is certainly still out on him.
While the Yankees holding pitching over everything else may be obvious, it's still good to see general manager Brian Cashman and the Yankees' brass so focused on their biggest need.
It shows this organization is not satisfied with what it's running out there and will undoubtedly look to improve the starting rotation as the trade deadline looms.
