Derek Jeter has found great success in a very tough sport and credits his dad Dr. Sanderson Charles Jeter's positive influence as a key to his success.
"My dad is very positive, very optimistic", Jeter says. We play a sport that's full of negativity on a daily basis, but he always tries to find a positive out of things. He's been a very, very vital part of my career and obviously my entire life. He always tried to find a positive, so that's what I try to do.
Jeter feels that his parents are the reason why he's been so successful and appreciates all the sacrifices they have made for him. His dad has seen his son progress from a young player into a World Series Champion, but he says with himself and his wife "we're parents first". "We think of things that happened with Derek back in Little League, and to see him now progress as a ballplayer, as a man, we're always in that parent mode," Dr. Jeter said.
Derek always credits his family as the foundation that keeps him grounded and he remains close with parents.
They're the ones that teach you right from wrong. The ones you lean on when you need someone to talk to. I talk to my family a lot. They're there before before things snowball, so to speak. They're there for me when it comes to everything.
Jeter's parents have been trying to soak up as much of Derek's last season and were on hand this week in Seattle as Derek received a standing ovation from the Mariners fans. "It has to make you feel pretty good, because there aren't too many players that can come into a ballpark and get a standing ovation that's not there home field," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "I hope they realize that they've been a big part of this and they should be proud of the man they've raised."
