Only this time, there wasn't much mention of the game; instead, the majority of the questions were to talk about the passing of former Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer, who passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 83 from heart and kidney problems.
Zimmer and Girardi had been connected in so many ways, which the Yankees skipper reflected on, trying to hold back some tears. When Girardi first came up as a player with the Cubs, Zimmer was his manager when he got called up in 1989 and then were reunited when Girardi played briefly with the Colorado Rockies.
When Joe Torre became the manager for the Yankees in 1996, Zimmer and Girardi were reunited again as Torre had selected Zimmer to be his bench coach while the Yankees had signed Girardi. Together, Zimmer and Girardi were a part of three World Series championships with the team in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
