MLB Trade Rumors: GMs Say Yankees Have Pieces to Make 1 or 2 Big Deals

The New York Yankees will be in the market for a starting pitcher or two before the 2014 MLB trade deadline passes, but do they have the pieces necessary to make any significant deals?

According to's Jim Bowden (subscription required), there are numerous general managers around baseball who believe the Yanks do have enough young talent to make one or two big trades:

The New York Yankees are famous for signing big-name free agents. And when you sign big-name free agents, you usually have to forfeit top draft picks. As a result, the Yankees have been criticized within the baseball circles for having a relatively weak farm system, which will make it impossible for them to add impact players before the trade deadline.

However, I've spoken to several general managers in recent weeks who disagree with this sentiment and believe the Yankees have what it takes to make a big deal (or two) this summer if they decide to give team captain Derek Jeter one more shot at October.

Among those listed in Bowden's report who are of value are relievers Dellin Betances and Adam Warren, as well as minor-league prospects like catchers Gary Sanchez and Peter O'Brien, and right-hander Luis Severino.

On top of those, the Yanks have more assets in the form of their three first-round draft picks from last year and you can throw John Ryan Murphy in as a player who has impressed and is picking up some value.

That's certainly good news for New York, who is often pegged as having a bad farm system. If there are general managers out there that hold the players mentioned above in such high regard, it's likely the Yanks can make a deal for an impact player or two if they are willing to part ways with their future.

We've already been told that Betances is untouchable, and with the way Warren is pitching, it's unlikely either of the two most dominant relievers in the Yanks' 'pen will be moved since they are contributing now.

The Yankees are a win-now squad and holding onto prospects isn't something they've exactly valued. The better bet is that the Bronx Bombers let their prospects go in order to better their chances to compete this season because in New York, this season is all that matters.
