UPDATE: Wednesday, May 21 at 1:00 p.m. ET

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda made the next step in his recovery from a back injury on Wednesday when he threw his third bullpen session.

According to Meredith Marakovits of YES Network, Pineda's session was a success:

The 30 pitches thrown by Pineda are the most he's tossed in a session during his rehab. Since there were no issues, Pineda can continue to move forward in the process.

What that next step is will be decided on Thursday.

Either Pineda will throw another bullpen session or he can face live batting in a minor-league rehab start. If it's the latter, Pineda could be back on the earlier side of June as opposed to mid-June.

The news for Shawn Kelley isn't as nice.

Marakovits is also reporting that Kelley had a setback after feeling tightness in his back a day after having a catch:

Kelley will now have to take more time to heal his injury and that's a blow to the Yanks' bullpen for the time being.

Michael Pineda threw his second bullpen session in a week on Sunday and the New York Yankees right-hander didn't come up with any issues.

According to YES Network's Meredith Marakovits, Pineda threw 28 pitches and had no problems with his injured back:

If all goes well in his next bullpen session in a few days, Pineda can start facing live batting and from there will make some minor-league rehab starts as the next step in his return.

It has been slated the 25-year-old will be back some time around the first or second week of June.

As for reliever Shawn Kelley, Marakovits is reporting that he's currently in the stage of playing good 'ol catch, which is how Pineda began his rehab:

Kelley figures to be back sooner than Pineda, though, as he is scheduled to have a rehab appearance on Friday, and if all goes well with his bullpen session on Wednesday, it appears he could be back on week from today (Sunday).
