Detroit Tigers Sign New York Yankees RP Joba Chamberlain to a 1-Year, $2.5MM Deal

The Joba Chamberlain era in the Bronx is officially over after seven seasons, as the 28-year-old reliever has signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.
Chamberlain had perhaps one of the worst seasons in his professional career, posting a 2-1 record with a 4.93 ERA in 45 appearances and saw his playing time dwindle with each poor performance and it was only a matter of time that Chamberlain would be finding a new home after 2013.
With Chamberlain now in the Motor City, he will likely compete to be the setup man for new closer Joe Nathan and he will get a chance to resurrect a career that has taken a gigantic tailspin since his arrival in 2007.
Upon his arrival in the big leagues in 2007, Chamberlain captivated the entire fan base and the sport with his dominating effort where he went 2-0 with a 0.38 ERA in 19 appearances and had 34 strikeouts in 24 innings.
The following year, the Yankees decided to convert Chamberlain from a reliever into a starting role due to the injury suffered by Chien-Ming Wang and Chamberlain had some success starting for the Yankees and even won a 1-0 game over Josh Beckett and the Boston Red Sox in July of 2008 at Fenway Park, but a shoulder injury landed him on the disabled list and seemed to take away the velocity on his fastball that once put fear into the hearts of opposing hitters.
In 2009, the Yankees decided to keep Chamberlain as a starter, but he was nothing more than a mediocre starter who seemed to struggle with command and failed to get through five innings in most of his starts and was demoted to the bullpen by the end of the season, which is where he permanently stayed for his tenure in the Bronx.
In 2013, it got so bad for Chamberlain that fans were holding their breath when he pitched on the mound as opposed to the excitement that he used to generate back when he used to be a popular name and figure on the mound. But with the one-year deal with the Tigers, Chamberlain will use the 2014 season to try and revive his career and getting out of the Bronx with the spotlight on him all the time might be what was best for the former top prospect of the Yankeees.
