New York Yankees Pitcher Michael Pineda Will Compete for a Rotation Spot

On January 13, 2012, then Seattle Mariners rookie pitcher Michael Pineda, along with Jose Campos, was traded to the New York Yankees for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi. But due to tendinitis and a subsequent anterior labral tear in his right shoulder, he missed the 2012 and 2013 seasons, yet having to pitch a game for the Yankees.

In 2014, however, that could all change.

Via a tweet by Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says that Pineda is "healthy and will compete for a rotation spot in Spring Training."

He had a solid campaign with the Mariners in 2011, going 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA. He had 173 strikeouts in 171 innings pitched, was selected to the All-Star team that year, and finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. Back in 2011, his fastball reached almost 95 MPH, and was ranked fourth in velocity behind Alexei Ogando, Justin Verlander, and David Price. This is definitely good news for the Yankees. If Pineda pitches like he did in 2011, he will definitely earn a spot in the rotation.
