New York Yankees Inquiring on Trading for Seattle Mariners 2B Dustin Ackley: Report

At the annual MLB winter meetings in Orlando, the New York Yankees are searching the market for a second basemen with the departure of Robinson Cano, who left to sign a 10-year deal with the Seattle Mariners last week.

With Cano now locked up in Seattle, it puts Dustin Ackley, the team's current second basemen and also outfielder; on the trade block in which teams have inquired on the availability of the 25-year-old Ackley.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and WFAN reported that the Yankees are one of three teams to inquire about Seattle's second basemen; the New York Mets and San Diego Padres have also inquired as well.

"#yankees #mets #padres have inquired on dustin ackley. #mariners," he tweeted.

Ackley's offensive numbers don't jump out at you like some of the other names that the Yankees have looked at like Brandon Phillips of the Cincinnati Reds; he hit .253 with four home runs and 31 RBI in 113 games for the Mariners last year while playing second and third base, plus left and center field; his ability to play the outfield adds more value to him because of the versatility he provides.

However, the Yankees already have an outfield set with Alfonso Soriano in left, Jacoby Ellsbury in center and Carlos Beltran in right field and have a surplus of reserves in Ichiro Suzuki, Brett Gardner and Vernon Wells; all of which could end up being traded before the start of the 2014 season; so their interest in Ackley would likely be for second base.

But honestly, there are better options on the market who can provide more than what Ackley could for the Yankees; especially with the bat, and this could simply be a case where Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is simply performing his due diligence on the second base market.
