New York Yankees, Carlos Beltran Agree to Deal

After losing Robinson Cano to the Seattle Mariners and Curtis Granderson to the New York Mets, the New York Yankees seemed to have quickly rebounded, agreeing to a three-year, $45 million deal with free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran. The deal will not be announced yet because Beltran needs to pass a physical.

Beltran will now be joining a really crowded Yankees outfield that will most likely have Brett Gardner in left field, Beltran in right field, and the newly acquired Jacoby Ellsbury in center. This leaves Ichiro Suzuki and Vernon Wells as the odd men out, but this seems to be more of a good problem than a bad one. The Yankees, so far this offseason, have been involved in and making big splashes by refusing to give Cano more than $200 million, and by signing Beltran, who wanted to come to the Yankees before signing a seven-year, $119 million contract with the Mets.

Although the Yankees were reluctant to give him a three-year deal because of his age (he will be 37 in April, this is a good signing for the Yankees. Last year with the St. Louis Cardinals, he hit .296 with 24 home runs and 84 runs batted in, while helping his team reach the World Series, and having a switch hitter in the middle of the lineup never hurt anybody. He’ll also likely be seeing some DH time, switching every so often with Alfonso Soriano. Along with him and Soriano, the Yankees 2014 projected lineup could also include Derek Jeter, Mark Teixiera, Alex Rodriguez (if his suspension isn’t held up), Kelly Johnson, Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Brett Gardner. On paper, this is a solid lineup, so look for the Yankees to contend in 2014.
