Many teams have different reactions to missing the playoffs. The reaction the New York Yankees tend to have is spend money; a lot of money.
Four years ago when the Yankees missed the playoffs in 2008, the following winter, the team reacted by spending over $400 million on CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Mark Teixiera, re-signing Andy Pettitte and trading for Nick Swisher. The result: winning the 2009 World Series that following October.
So it would make sense for the Yankees to spend a ton of money this coming winter since they missed out on the 2013 postseason; which is what looks like my be coming, as Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York is reporting, as the Yankees could go on a spending spree of as much as $300 million this winter.
The Yankees main target this winter is retaining second basemen Robinson Cano, who could get anywhere from $180-$200 million in a contract. The Yankees are also interested in 24-year-old Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who could really be a plus to a rotation that struggled with inconsistency down the stretch.
The Yankees are also rumored to be interested in Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann and St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran, both of which are free agents once the season officially ends with the conclusion of the 2013 World Series.
With McCann, some suspect that he could get a deal in the five-year, $75 million range, as he is the top catcher on the free agent market and with the Yankees losing out on Russell Martin this past winter, the team might need a replacement as soon as possible to fill the void he left in 2013 since none of his replacements did the job.
Beltran is in the final season of a two-year, $26 million deal that he signed with the Cardinals before the 2012 season and could be helping the Cardinals get to the 2013 World Series. Beltran was on the Yankees radar back in 2005 and the former Mets outfielder was willing to take a discount to play for the Yankees, but the Yankees chose to pursue pitching that winter and passed on Beltran, who ended up playing in Queens. Nine years later, Beltran again is interested in playing for the Yankees.
For a few years, the Yankees have been rumored to be trying to get under the $189 million mark as far as payroll goes, but owner Hal Steinbrenner has said that while that target is a goal, he would not compromise winning for the payroll, and if they needed to spend money to make the team better, he would.
Clearly, this latest report is a clear message that the Yankees are going to do whatever it takes to get back to playing in October baseball, as Steinbrenner knows that a worthy product on the field will make him the most money overall as opposed to cutting back on expenses to save a few bucks.
While Hal certainly isn't his dad, he still has Steinbrenner blood in him and wants to win and in order for him to make money, he will need to spend it on the field, which is what it looks like the Yankees will do come November and December.
