The nightmare season for New York Yankees shortstop and captain Derek Jeter is officially over on Wednesday, as the team has announced that they have placed their 39-year-old shortstop on the disabled list from the ankle injury he suffered over the weekend against the Boston Red Sox and will be shut down for the rest of the 2013 regular season.
The ankle injury is to the same ankle which Jeter fractured last October during Game 1 of the 2012 American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers, an injury that required surgery and kept him out in the 2013 season until the beginning of July.
The Yankees removed Jeter from Saturday's 13-9 loss to the Red Sox on Saturday in the sixth inning after Jeter came off limping following a throw he made to first base and the team wanted to rest him to see if the ankle would get better, but since the team has placed him on season-ending DL, it's quite clear that the ankle is giving him issues.
To prepare for Jeter's injury, the Yankees traded for Seattle Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan following their 7-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Ryan is a well-known fielding but very light-hitting shortstop from his time with Seattle. Ryan will start at shortstop for the Yankees on Wednesday night against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards
Jeter was never fully healed, spending four separate times on the disabled list in 2013, which is why he hit only .191 with one home run and seven RBI in 17 games for the Yankees in 2013.
The captain has an $8 million option for the 2014 season, which many feel that given the injuries he has suffered this season, will likely exercise and look to play again for the Yankees.
