This rollercoaster season now brings the New York Yankees to the final turn in what will determine if they make the playoffs.
Realistically the Yankees cannot just tread water, they need to win at least eight out of the next 12 games minimum to make that final push. Over their final 12 games, nine of those games are against losing teams, so if they could do well against the Red Sox and Orioles they could secure a position at the end of the season.
Currently, New York is only two games out of a Wild Card berth behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa has gone 3-7 over their last ten games and is struggling at the wrong time. The Yankees do have three more against the Rays which may be huge depending on how the Yankees take care of business now.
The focus and task at hand is winning games though much has been talked about the Bombers retaliating against the Red Sox for Ryan Dempster hitting Alex Rodriguez in their last meeting. When asked about this yesterday after the game many Yankees are only talking about winning the games and making a move in the standings. However, if the Yankees take the first three games you may eventually see that unfold at some point in this four game series.
The series begins tonight in the Bronx with RHP Ivan Nova (8-4, 2.88) against RHP Jake Peavy (11-5, 3.91) in the 7:05 p.m. ET start.
Nova was named AL Pitcher of the Month for August the first such Yankee since CC Sabathia held the honor in July 2011. Ivan went 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA pitching 43 1/3 innings with 31 strikeouts and 12 walks during that span.
The right-hander has been nothing short of stellar since coming back from his stint in the minors during the summer.
Rest of the pitching matchups for the following three games are as follows:
Friday 7 p.m. LHP Andy Pettitte (10-9, 4.01) vs LHP Felix Doubront (10-6, 3.89)
Saturday 1 p.m. LHP David Huff (2-0, 3.32) vs RHP John Lackey (8-12, 3.22)
Sunday 1 p.m. RHP Hiroki Kuroda (11-10, 2.99) vs LHP Jon Lester (13-8, 3.88)
