On the eve of a crucial four-game showdown with the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees had to focus on the Chicago White Sox at Yankee Stadium and try to complete the three-game sweep of the last place team.
On the mound for the Yankees was their ace CC Sabathia, who was looking for his second straight win at home, but the White Sox got to him early in the top of the first inning when Avisail Garcia's RBI double made it 1-0 Chicago.
The White Sox didn't hold the lead very long as in the bottom of the first inning, Robinson Cano continued his hot hitting by crushing his 26th home run of the season against rookie starter Erik Johnson; a solo shot that tied the game at 1-1.
Both Sabathia and Johnson put up zeroes in the next couple of frames, but in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Yankees got to Johnson, as Lyle Overbay's RBI double gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
With two on, Brett Gardner ripped a two-run triple to deep left field that scored Overbay and Ichiro Suzuki to make it 4-1 Yankees. Later in the inning, Cano hit an RBI infield single, which made it 5-1.
While the Yankees offense did its job, Sabathia continued to give the Yankees an ace-like effort and kept the White Sox offense off the board by continuing his strong performance later into the game.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alfonso Soriano's sacrifice fly made it 6-1, as the Yankees looked like they would cruise to victory, but in the top of the eighth inning, the White Sox rallied to get back in the game.
After Sabathia allowed two hits with an out in the eighth inning, Yankees manager Joe Girardi finally pulled his ace after 7.1 innings of gritty baseball, allowing three runs on five hits, walking four and striking out four.
David Robertson came into the game, but was absolutely dreadful in his relief appearance, as he allowed an RBI single by Garcia to make it 6-2, then walked Dayan Viciedo to load the bases with two outs, which was followed by Josh Phelegy's two-run single to make the game 6-4.
Later in the inning, Marcus Semien's RBI single made it 6-5, which forced Girardi to go to Mariano Rivera to get a four-inning save so the Yankees could hold onto the lead and try to win the game. In the next at-bat, Rivera struck out Alejandro De Aza to end the White Sox threat of tying the game.
In the top of the ninth inning, Rivera pitches an easy, scoreless inning to hold onto the win and the Yankees complete the three-game sweep of the White Sox by winning 6-5. Sabathia got the win for the Yankees, improving to 13-11 on the year, Johnson took the loss and dropped to 0-1; Rivera got his 41st save of the season.
Now winners in five out of their last six at home, the Yankees are now at 75-64 and will have the first place Boston Red Sox in for a crucial four-game set at Yankee Stadium; a series that could really get the Yankees back into the division race, along with the wild card chase too, as they are only two games back.
On Thursday night, Ivan Nova (8-4, 2.88 ERA) will take the ball and look to continue his hot streak from August as he will face off against Red Sox right hander Jake Peavy (11-8, 3.91 ERA.)
