The New York Yankees and manager Joe Girardi finally hit their breaking point with Phil Hughes this week, as they have finally decided to take him out of the starting rotation and demote him to the bullpen. Left-hander David Huff will take Hughes' spot in the rotation. Andy McCullough of the Newark-Star Ledger confirmed the move in the rotation as Girardi announced the switch after Tuesday night's game.
"Hughes is moving to the bullpen. Huff to start Saturday," he tweeted.
Huff will also get Hughes' next scheduled start, which will be on Saturday at Yankee Stadium against the first place Boston Red Sox.
Hughes made his last start for the Yankees on Monday, but only lasted 1.1 innings after a rain delay knocked him out of the game and the Yankees replaced him with Huff, who pitched 5.1 innings of relief and got the win against the Chicago White Sox on Labor Day.
Hughes is 4-13 with a 4.86 ERA for the Yankees in 2013 and has not won a game for the Yankees since July 2, which is why Girardi is making the move to take him out now while the Yankees are still in a playoff race.
Huff is currently 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA in split time with the Yankees and Cleveland Indians; with the Yankees, Huff's ERA has been an outstanding 1.13 in 16 innings pitched.
