Who Will the New York Yankees Add to the Expanded September Roster?

Decisions, decisions… tomorrow Major League rosters expand to 40 and there were four newly empty lockers in the New York Yankees locker room today.

The Bombers will add a third catcher, another utility infielder and some more arms for this final run at a playoff birth. New York plays 17 days in a row without a day off, so any extra help will be used especially regarding the bullpen.

Yankee starters (except for Ivan Nova) haven't been able to go deep into games, so extra arms should be of some quality not just to see what they could do.

First the Triple-A season ends on Monday and with the Yankees affiliate Scranton Wilkes-Barre not in the playoff picture expect catcher JR Murphy to make the roster. Murphy has steadily moved through the Yankees' system and this year started in Double-A Trenton for 49 games before being promoted to Scranton. Murphy has had a very good season hitting .270 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs. Murphy can hit and this season has dramatically improved behind the plate making him a solid all-around catcher that could compete next season for a catching position in the Bronx. To add Murphy to the 40-man roster the Yankees need to make a move like moving Jayson Nix to the 60-day DL or possibly Travis Hafner.

For the infield David Adams is the most likely option being already on the 40-man and able to play all infield positions. David has proven this year on the Major League level he can hit too.

Brent Lillibridge and Alberto Gonzalez are other options, but an additional move would have to be made to add either to the roster.

Extra relievers will most undoubtedly include RHP Preston Claiborne who would be added on Monday and has been excellent this year moving ahead of Joba Chamberlain in the pecking order.

RHP Dellin Betances is another big arm that will be added to bolster the pen. Other possible options are top prospects LHP Nik Turley and RHP Jose Ramirez.

Turley has been compared to a young Andy Pettitte and in 140 innings had 138 strikeouts. Nik has an above average fastball he can command on both sides of the plate and a nasty curveball. Jose has three pitches including a consistent 95 mph fastball, slider and changeup.

Less than 24 hours before we know who they will add to help in the push for a playoff spot.
