On the New York Yankees injury front infielder Eduardo Nunez is scheduled for an MRI on his right knee today. Nunez who was originally penciled into last night's lineup was scratched after batting practice with continued knee pain. Yankees still haven't called up another infielder hoping they can bide time with expanding rosters available on Sunday. Manager Joe Girardi decided he would rather have the extra arm in the bullpen and go with a short bench.
With the off day today hopefully Robinson Cano will be back in the lineup on Friday. Cano suffered a left hand contusion when hit by a pitch by A. J. Happ in Tuesday night's game. Remember Happ is the won who hit Curtis Granderson and broke his forearm in Spring Training.
Since coming off the DL this time around, captain Derek Jeter has gone 3-for-12 with one run scored, 1 RBI and one walk. Jeter is moving well and has looked good in the field.
Travis Hafner and Zoilo Almonte are hitting off a tee and will take live batting practice by the end of the week. Both players could re-join the Yankees once the rosters expand on Sunday.
RHP David Phelps is getting closer to resume throwing, while RHP Michael Pineda has already been throwing side sessions at the Tampa facility. With continued progress both pitchers at some point should be added to the rosters.
The starting rotation against the Baltimore Orioles this weekend is set with CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes. There has been much speculation whether Hughes would be bumped back to the White Sox series, but they have elected to keep him in his regular slot.
Since coming to the Yankees, Alfonso Soriano has been on fire. In 31 games with New York, the left fielder has 33 hits, 24 runs scored, 11 home runs including his career 400th on Tuesday night. His glove hasn't been too shabby either with four assists and no errors in 66 chances.
The Yankees currently sit in fourth place in the division, 8.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox and 5.5 games back in the Wild Card race. New York knows to have any shot at a playoff position winning series will be imperative if they are to make a run. If you haven't gotten your NYC sports apparel yet, make sure to check out LogoWear!
