For most of the season, Hiroki Kuroda had been one of the most dependable starters for the New York Yankees, but in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Kuroda looked like anything but a reliable starter.
On Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Kuroda again had an awful outing and put the Yankees in another hole in the bottom of the first inning.
Brett Lawrie's two-run double put Toronto up 2-0 and then after Kuroda struck out J.P. Arencibia, catcher Chris Stewart dropped the third strike and had to throw him out at first, but the ball ended up going into right field, which scored two more runners and quickly, the Yankees were down 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Edwin Encarnacion crushes his 34th home run of the year with a two-run shot off Kuroda and the Blue Jays went up 6-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jose Reyes' sacrifice fly made it 7-0 for Toronto and the Yankees found themselves in the same spot that they put Toronto in the night before.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Yankees got their only offense of the night when Alex Rodriguez's RBI single made the game 7-1 and then Mark Reynolds' RBI double made it 7-2 and nearly was 7-3, but A-Rod was tagged out at home.
Kuroda made it through five innings; as he gave up five hits on nine runs, walked one and struck out four and took the loss, dropping him to 11-10. Even with the two straight losses, Kuroda had pitched so well to the point where his ERA is still at 2.89.
Blue Jays starter Todd Richmond lasted 5.2 innings, allowed two runs on three hits, walked four and struck out seven and picked up his second win of the season for Toronto in the 7-2 victory.
The Yankees, now 70-63 and 8.5 games out of first place in the American League East, are still 5.5 games out of the American League Wild Card and will be off Thursday night to travel back home to the Bronx and begin a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.
