After a 2012 season that included two stints on the disabled list and a shellacking in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers, Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia enters 2013 on a healthy and reinvigorated note, reports Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com.

In addition to shedding weight, from over 300 pounds now down to 290 entering the spring, offseason elbow surgery has given Sabathia the mobility and free range to go through his delivery restriction-free,

“I definitely feel a relief, just having that range of motion back and not having that ache at the end of my extension," he said. "I felt that right away, so hopefully I can just continue to get better and continue to feel less. After last year, going through what I went through pretty much the whole second half, playing catch so far, it feels a lot better.”

While Sabathia still finished 2012 with respectable 15-6 record, he surrendered a career-worse 22 home runs and held his highest ERA in his four years as a Yankee at 3.38. However, he is still the undisputed ace of the Yankees staff entering 2013, and considering he pitched all of 2012 with a hindering elbow issue, Sabathia should have a bounce-back season.

Manager Joe Girardi anticipates a healthier 2013 as well,

“Any time you need surgery at the end of the year, I think it’s fair to say that you weren’t 100 percent. But I feel better that we were able to address the problem and he's coming into spring training healthy. He wasn’t overworked last year, so I feel better about it.”

Sabathia will throw his first session of the spring Thursday, however, it will be a limited session with mostly fastballs being thrown.

The southpaw is expected to take the ball on Monday, April 1, when the Boston Red Sox come to the Bronx for opening day.
