While the edict all offseason from New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner has been reducing payroll to under $189 million, Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reports that Steinbrenner has had preliminary conversations with second baseman Robinson Cano's agent, Scott Boras, regarding a contract extension. Albeit, the conversations have been limited and brief, however, Steinbrenner's sentiment is strong that all efforts will be made to retain the slugger,
“We want him to be a Yankee for his entire career.”
The reputation when it comes to a Boras player is to give up no leverage and play out a contract, putting himself in a position to get the maximum deal he aspires for. However, it should also be noted that Yankees policy is to avoid extension talk altogether until the conclusion of the contract season, a stance they even used with the Yankees captain, Derek Jeter.
The expectation is Cano will demand a contract in the neighborhood of 10 years and $200 million, easily making him the highest-paid second baseman in the game and among the highest paid overall.
Maintaining a batting average over .300 and belting 25 home runs or more the last four years, while also garnering two Gold Glove Awards over that timeframe, Cano will meet the premium he is demanding when he hits free agency.
Whether that premium is met by the Yankees or by another ball club, that will most likely not be determined until after the 2013 season when Cano tests the waters.
