Loading ...Before Kevin Youkilis signed his one-year deal with the New York Yankees, the former Boston Red Sox fan favorite reached out to his brother-in-law, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, to ask the NFL star if he would ever consider playing for the New York Jets or New York Giants.
Youkilis, 33, is married to Brady's sister. In his Yankees Access Special, set to air Tuesday on the YES Network, Youkilis discussed his relationship with Brady.
"He's great. It's pretty fun. I ask him questions," said Youkilis. "I even asked a question about coming to New York: "Could you ever be a Jet or Giant?" And he's like, "I don't know. Luckily I'm not in your shoes." And I'm like "Thanks a lot for your advice, buddy!"
Youkilis played a big role in baseball's biggest rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees, so switching sides in the battle was not an easy decision. However, Youkilis ultimately decided that taking New York's offer gave him the best opportunity to succeed next season.
In 122 games last season, Youkilis hit .235 with 19 home runs and 60 RBI, finishing the season with the Chicago White Sox following a mid-season trade from Boston, where he played the first eight and a half seasons of his career.
As a member of the Red Sox, Youkilis' biggest enemy was Yankees reliever Joba Chamberain, who threw inside fastballs at Youkilis on several different occasions. Despite their past differences, Chamberlain made a phone call to Youkilis and the veteran infielder returned a text message to Chamberlain, putting an end to any potential conflict between the two in the future.
Youkilis will start the season as New York's starting third baseman while Alex Rodriguez recovers from hip surgery. A-Rod is aiming to return at the All-Star break, but there's a possibility he could miss the entire season, or even be suspended by Major League Baseball if he can't clear his name from the ongoing performance-enhancing drug scandal surrounding Anthony Bosch and his Biogenesis anti-aging clinic in Miami.
