Following surgery on a balky left hip January 16, the speculation regarding a timetable for a return on All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez went rampant. The best timetable up until now has been from the most reputable source, Dr. Bryan Kelly, the man who performed the surgery. However, as Kelly estimated an optimistic target of post All-Star break, general manager Brian Cashman prepared the Yankees faithful for the worst while appearing on WFAN with co-hosts Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts.
Following an inquiry by the hosts if Rodriguez could miss the entire season, a realistic Cashman expressed that it is indeed a possibility,
“ “Yeah," Cashman replied when asked if there was a chance that A-Rod could miss the entire season. "I think because (of) the nature of the surgery and the condition that he's trying to recover from, you know, there is that chance.” ”
In an article posted by CBS New York, Cashman notes that the full-effort will be there from Rodriguez to get back to the Bronx at some point this season and has an overall positive approach that Rodriguez could be back, however reiterates the significance of the operation. Additionally, keep in mind the importance of the left hip in the right-hander's swing.
Needless to say, Rodriguez has a tough road ahead of him in getting strength back in that hip. It is anticipated that a patient and diligent rehabilitation process will be followed. However, keep in mind manager Joe Girardi will be able to safely insert newest addition Kevin Youkilis at third base. In preparation for a rejuvenated 2013, Youkilis has already begun working with Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long.
In addition, expect the chances of newly-signed Dan Johnson making the big club to enhance after agreeing to a minor-league deal. Johnson, who can play either first or third base, as well as serve as designated hitter, will most likely platoon with Eduardo Nunez between the starting DH role and the occasional spelling at third base when Youkilis needs a day off.
