In a scenario that can most likely be labeled as much ado about nothing, newest Yankee and projected starting third baseman Kevin Youkilis has yet to return reliever Joba Chamberlain's phone call from December. According to ESPNNewYork.com senior writer Andrew Marchand, Chamberlain acknowledges he has done all in his power to welcome his newest teammate to the Bronx,
“ "I did everything I can do," Chamberlain said. "I can’t control what Kevin Youkilis does. We’ll go on from there." ”
What makes it even more much ado about nothing is how Youkilis played down any past encounters with Chamberlain in his introductory call to the media upon his signing. Needless to say, past chin music and a beaning last season (see below) have always made things a little tense between the two, however and as Chamberlain acknowledges in Marchand's write-up, they will look to achieve bigger goals as teammates,
“ "I am glad you are on our team," Chamberlain said he told Youkilis in the voicemail. "I’m glad you are on our side. I’m looking forward to seeing you and, hopefully, you can win one over here for the good guys." ”
For both, important rebound seasons loom as Youkilis will take on an important role in the expected long-term absence of third baseman Alex Rodriguez, while Chamberlain looks to try and establish himself as a potential option in the ninth inning in life after the legendary Mariano Rivera.
Here is the aforementioned beaning from last season after Youkilis was traded to the Chicago White Sox, courtesy of MLB.com.
