Victoria was the young Sandy Hook Elementary school teacher who attempted to shield her students from the gunman that eventually ravaged many lives. She was considered a hero in the eyes of many and an avid New York Yankees fan. Soto was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Jeter phoned Donna Soto a few hours after the funeral and spoke to her for quite some time as reported by family members. The Yankees' organization confirmed Jeter did make the phone call, but declined any details of the conversation.

Victoria's sister Carlee excitedly tweeted, "Derek Jeter just called my mom!!!!! Thanks Vicki, she needs it thank you  @Yankeeses this meant a lot to my mother and all of us." Jeter was Victoria's favorite player on the team.

"Vicki loved the Yankees — that was part of her eulogy," James Wiltsie, a cousin of Soto's, said Wednesday night. "No one in the family reached out, so (Jeter) must have heard about it and … reached out. Nothing is going to fix the fact that [Donna] had to bury her daughter today," Wiltsie told the Daily News as reported by MLB.com. "But I'm happy that it brought some comfort. … People like Jeter have reached out. It brings some comfort to know that people recognize Vicki as a hero."

Soto was one of 26 who was shot to death on Dec. 14 where 20 of the deceased were children.

Jeter is the second New York area pro-athlete to reach out to a family who lost a loved one in the tragedy. New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz visited the family of slain 6 year old Jack Pinto, who was buried in a replica Cruz jersey. Cruz was Pinto's favorite player on the Giants, his favorite sport team.
