The New York Yankees will begin their 2013 Spring Training Schedule on the road against the Atlanta Braves in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The Bronx Bombers open up their home schedule in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 24 against the Toronto Blue Jays. It will be the Yankees' 18th Spring Training at the old Legends Field renamed George M. Steinbrenner Field March 27, 2008 after the Yankees long-time principal owner.
New York will play a total of 33 spring training games which includes 17 games at George M. Steinbrenner Field including a March 6 contest against the Dominican Republic World Classic team.
This year's schedule will start nine days earlier due to the World Baseball Classic with pitchers and catchers reporting on Feb. 12 and position players on Feb. 17. The first full squad workout will be Feb. 18 in Tampa.
Some of the Yankees Grapefruit League opponents include their four AL East rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals on March 11 making their first appearance in Tampa since 2006, the new American League addition Houston Astros, the Miami Marlins making their first trip to Tampa since 2005 and the American League Championship winner Detroit Tigers. Noticeably absent from the schedule will be inter-city rival the New York Mets.
New York opens the regular season at Yankee Stadium on April 1 against the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series.
