The Yankees are focusing on signing players to one-year deals this offseason, taking them out of contention for many high-profile free agents, but Youkilis is willing to accept a one-year deal if the money is a premium amount.
A-Rod is prepared to undergo hip surgery and could be out until June, creating another hole to fill on New York's roster. However, a versatile player like Youkilis is more valuable than a natural third baseman because of his ability to play first base or designated hitter once A-Rod returns.
Youkilis, 33, hit .235 with 19 home runs and 60 RBI last season, playing for both the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox.
Not only would Youkilis provide the Yankees with a power-hitting corner infielder to fill in for A-Rod, but the three-time All-Star also has proven he can hit in the postseason. In 29 career playoff games, Youkilis is batting .306 with six home runs and 17 RBI.
The Yankees could also replace A-Rod with someone on the roster such as Jayson Nix or Eduardo Nunez, or look at other free agent options. Marco Scutaro, Jeff Keppinger, Yunel Escobar, and Stephen Drew have been linked to the Yankees this offseason.
