After claiming Eli Whiteside earlier this month, the New York Yankees have now designated the 33 year-old catcher for assignment in order to make room for Andy Pettitte on the team's 40-man roster.

Whiteside and the Yankees had agreed to a $625,000 contract for next season after he was claimed from the San Francisco Giants. However, his roster spot was needed for Pettitte once the left-hander's deal became official.

Whiteside hit just .091 last season in 12 games with the Giants. He holds a career .215 batting average with 10 home runs and 43 RBI in five major league seasons.

Russell Martin is currently exploring the free agent market, leaving the Yankees with Chris Stewart and Francisco Cervelli as the team's top two catchers.
