Replacing Ivan Nova in the starting rotation and taking the mound was rookie David Phelps. In five and a third innings, the young right-hander allowed three hits, two walks, and two runs with four strikeouts, but did not get the decision.

Finishing the sixth inning for Phelps was Boone Logan, who retired the final two batters of the inning.

Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson then pitched a scoreless inning each, keeping the Yankees close in a 2-1 game.

In the ninth inning, closer Rafael Soriano came in to keep New York close, but allowed a solo home run to James Loney, increasing Boston's lead to 3-1.

However, the Yankees bounced back in the bottom of the ninth as Curtis Granderson started the inning with a leadoff single, followed by a pinch hit two run home run by Ibanez to tie the game.

Later in the inning, Derek Jeter doubled, Nick Swisher walked, and Alex Rodriguez walked, loading the bases for New York with just one out, but Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano weren't able to drive in the game-winning run.

Soriano came back out for the 10th inning, retiring the side without allowing any runs.

In the 11th inning, veteran Derek Lowe came in for the Yankees to pitch a scoreless inning, despite allowing a leadoff single. The 39 year-old right-hander stayed in the game for the 12th as well, pitching another scoreless inning to keep the game tied and eventually earn the win.

In the bottom of the 12th, Ibanez came through once again for the Yankees, hitting a walk off RBI single to score Francisco Cervelli and give the Yankees a 4-3 victory. Ibanez finished the game 2-3 with three RBI.

The Yankees are now one game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East, with each team having one game remaining on their schedules. The Yankees will play the Red Sox at 7:00 PM ET on Wednesday night to finish up the regular season.
