The New York Yankees have sent utility man Jayson Nix back to New York for an MRI exam after feeling soreness in his left hip flexor.
The injury took place while Nix was fielding a ground ball during Thursday's 6-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, but Nix did not tell the team about the injury until Friday.
"For us to send him back and get an MRI, there's a concern," said Girardi.
Derek Jeter was the team's designated hitter on Saturday, so Eduardo Nunez filled in at shortstop since Nix was unavailable.
If Nix has to miss an extended period of time, Nunez will become the team's primary utility infielder.
"There's a possibility we may not have Nix for a while, and that's why Nuney becomes all the more important," Girardi said.
Nunez is a better hitter than Nix, but lost his job as the team's back up infielder earlier in the season because of his defensive issues.
Nix is batting .243 with four home runs, 18 RBI, and six stolen bases in 74 games this season, while Nunez is batting .265 with a home run, nine RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 34 games this year.
