The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners, 5-2 in an afternoon game at Safeco Field on getaway day. The Yankees with the win maintain 20 games over .500. and are seven up in the AL East.
New York loaded the bases in the eighth on a Derek Jeter HBP and back-to-back singles by Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira. Jayson Nix would pinch hit for Raul Ibanez and promptly double to left field clearing the bases giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead. Russell Martin would single two batters later to plate Nix extending the lead to 5-2.
New York went 4-for-13 with RISP and had a number of chances to score through out the game before finally breaking through in the eighth.
The Yankees took the early lead when Jeter hit his eighth home run of the season in the top of the first. The Mariners struck right back and took the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs on a couple of walks and a force out.
From then on it was a pitching duel between the Bombers Ivan Nova and Mariners Hisashi Iwakuma. Nova threw 105 pitches over five innings giving up two runs on two hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Iwakuma also went five innings and gave up one run on six hits striking out three while walking three. Nova hit 97 mph on the gun and seemed to be overthrowing early and didn't have command of his fastball, but as usual Nova bent but never broke and still in his brief Major League career has never lost back-to-back games.
Teixeira made another great play once again on defense with a scoop pick on a line drive in the ninth. Jeter went 3-for-4 with a home run scoring two and HBP. Ichiro Suzuki led off for the Yankees and went 1-for-5 and was caught stealing.
Nova struggled with his control, but the bullpen was stellar combining for four scoreless innings striking out five with no walks. Rafael Soriano would pick up his 26 save of the season. David Phelps got his second win of the season in relief.
The Yankees will have an off day tomorrow before the weekend series against the Boston Red Sox at the Stadium.
