Contract extension for Rangers G Cameron Talbot 2013-14 0 000 (2 way) 2014-15 5 000 (one way)— Renaud Lavoie (@RenLavoieRDS) February 16, 2013
Sure, this may not be that big of news, but it could tell what the Rangers have planned down the line. Martin Biron is the team's current backup goalie, and his contract is set to expire after the 2013-14 season.
Renaud Lavoie says that the final year of Talbot's deal will be a one-way contract, leading us to believe he will be backing up Henrik Lundqvist, and for a very cap-friendly amount.
This is just speculation about Talbot's future with the Blueshirts, but it could all be a wash as since he'll be 27 or 28 by the time the one-way deal kicks in, the new CBA may require him to be paid like a one-way player.
Either way, Biron is already 35-years-old, and Talbot was on the team's postseason roster last year. So this move does make some sense that Talbot can be working his way to the big club. This move also suggests that Scott Stajcer has no role with the future of the francise.Tags: AHL, Cameron Talbot, Connecticut Whale, Henrik Lundqvist, Hockey, Martin Biron, New York, New York Rangers, NHL, Scott Stajcer
