By Mike PhillipsComing off a strong second half to the 2012 season that saw him end up with 32 home runs and 90 RBI's, New York Mets' first baseman Ike Davis looked poised for a breakthrough. Davis, who entered the 2013 season as a key figure in the Mets' lineup, was expected to bat cleanup and protect 140 million dollar man David Wright in the lineup. Unfortunately for Wright and the Mets, Davis' first half struggles from 2012 have resurfaced this season. Davis is off to an incredibly slow start at the plate, batting only .156 with four home runs and nine RBI's in 39 games this season. With the Mets in a massive slump, Davis' lock on the first base job has slipped, and it now appears his very job may be in jeopardy. According to a report from ESPN New York's Adam Rubin, Davis' slow start may get him demoted to the minor leagues.

By Mike PhillipsThe New York Mets will wrap up their three game series and road trip with one more game at Wrigley Field. The afternoon finale against the Chicago Cubs will start at 2:20 pm. The Mets are looking to win the rubber game of this three game set and win a series for the first time in a month. After Matt Harvey keyed a 3-2 Mets' victory on Friday afternoon, the Cubs bounced back with an 8-2 beat down yesterday. Dillon Gee (2-5, 6.13 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets, who could desperately use a good outing from him. The Cubs will counter with left hander Travis Wood (4-2, 2.03 ERA), who has been fantastic in the early going for Chicago.
Here is today's Mets' starting lineup:
- 2B Daniel Murphy
- 1B Justin Turner
- 3B David Wright
- RF Marlon Byrd
- LF Lucas Duda
- C Anthony Recker
- SS Ruben Tejada
- CF Juan Lagares
- SP Dillon Gee
Pre-Game Notes:

By Steve PopoloskiThe New York Mets (16-24) dropped the second game of their weekend series with the Chicago Cubs (18-24) Saturday afternoon by a score of 8-2. It was the seventh loss in the last ten games for the Mets, who lost by five or more runs for the third time in that span.
Jeremy Hefner (L, 0-5, 5.00) got the start for the eighth time this season and for the eighth time, the Mets lost. They now have also fallen to 0-9 following a Matt Harvey start, unable to create any momentum off their ace's spectacular outings. Conversely, Scott Feldman (W, 4-3) was rock solid, lasting six and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out six. Feldman has now won four of his last five outings after taking the loss in his first three starts of the season. In his last five starts, Feldman has allowed just five runs in 35 1/3 and innings.
Feldman was also responsible for some of his own run support, capping a four-run fourth off Hefner with a two-RBI double that scored Nate Schierholtz and Welington Castillo. The Cubs extended the lead as far as 8-0 off solo homers by Anthony Rizzo and Schierholtz, as well as a David DeJesus two-RBI single in the eighth off the recently recalled Collin McHugh.

By Mike PhillipsThe New York Mets have always had an innate ability to develop good young pitching. The latest product from the farm system, Matt Harvey, has come out of the gates with a historic start to his major league career. With expectations for the major league team relatively low, Mets fans have their eyes on the team's farm system to look for the next big ticket arm. That arm will be Zack Wheeler, who started the season pitching for the Mets' new Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.
Wheeler initially struggled for the Area 51's while trying to get used to the Pacific Coast League. The PCL is known as a hitter's paradise, and the Mets' affiliate in Las Vegas has a stadium that is known as the minor league equivalent of Coors Field. Wheeler got tattooed in his first five starts and also had to deal with a blister on his pitching hand. As the blister recovered, Wheeler managed to regain his groove and has been lights out in May. In his last three starts, Wheeler has pitched 20 innings and allowed only three runs on 14 hits. Wheeler has walked only three batters over that span and struck out 19, a huge turnaround after Wheeler had been struggling with his control early in the season.

By Kyle BrosnanThe New York Mets (16-23) look to extend their winning streak to three games in a row this afternoon in Wrigley Field as they take on the Chicago Cubs (17-24) in an afternoon tilt. First pitch is set for 1:05.
Jeremy Hefner (0-4, 4.61 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets. Hefner pitched well his last time out, holding the St. Louis Cardinals to three runs and five hits over six innings. He took a no decision.
Scott Feldman (3-3, 2.53 ERA) takes the mound for the Cubs. His last time out, he held the Washington Nationals to one run over six innings. He too took a no decision in that outing.
