After picking up a critical win to start their series with the Washington Nationals (60-51) last night, the New York Mets (54-59) gained ground in the National League East. The Mets now trail the Nationals by seven games in the division, and remain seven games out of a wild card spot. The Mets will look to pick up a series win as they continue their series in Washington tonight. First pitch at Nationals Park is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
The Mets will send lefty Jonathon Niese (5-7, 3.24 ERA) to the mound. Niese is still searching for his first win since the All Star Break. Niese took a loss in his last outing, allowing three runs in eight innings against the San Francisco Giants last Friday. The Nationals will counter with right hander Doug Fister (10-3, 2.68 ERA). Fister took a tough luck loss his last time out, allowing two runs in seven innings but falling to the Philadelphia Phillies last Friday.
