The New York Mets (52-57) didn't get off to a great start in their series with the San Francisco Giants (59-50) last night. Giants' starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong dominated the Mets' lineup, flirting with a no hitter and going the distance as the Giants beat the Mets 5-1. The Mets also lost ground to the Giants in the wild card standings, and now trail San Francisco by seven games. The Mets will look to pick up some ground as they continue their four game set with the Giants tonight. First pitch at Citi Field is scheduled for 7:10 pm.
The Mets will send rookie righty Jacob deGrom (5-5, 2.79 ERA) to the mound. deGrom will look to build on a strong July that elevated him into Rookie of the Year conversations. deGrom picked up a win in his last outing, tossing 6.1 shutout innings to beat the Milwaukee Brewers last Sunday. The Giants will counter with veteran right hander Jake Peavy (0-1, 4.50 ERA), who they acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a trade. Peavy lost his Giants' debut last Sunday, allowing four runs in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
New York Mets Lineup:
- RF Curtis Granderson
- 2B Daniel Murphy
- 3B David Wright
- 1B Lucas Duda
- C Travis d'Arnaud
- CF Juan Lagares
- SS Wilmer Flores
- SP Jacob deGrom
- LF Eric Young Jr
- Peavy has done very well against the Mets in his career, going 6-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 11 career starts against them.
- deGrom will be seeing the Giants for the first time.
- The Mets have lost five straight games to the Giants dating back to last season.
- deGrom has an innings limit of 185 innings on the season, so it will be important to watch how the Mets manage his innings starting tonight.
