The New York Mets fancy themselves as potential playoff contenders. If those playoff dreams have a shot of coming true, the Mets are going to have to take care of business this afternoon. The Mets won the opener of their weekend set with the San Diego Padres on Friday night, but dropped the second game 6-0 last night. The Mets (46-51) can't afford to drop a series to the lowly Padres (42-55) with two contending teams awaiting them over the next week, so getting a series win today is critical. First pitch for today's rubber game at PETCO Park is scheduled for 4:10 pm.

The Mets will send right hander Zack Wheeler (5-8, 3.90 ERA) to the mound. Wheeler recorded a win in his last time out, tossing 6.2 innings of one run ball to beat the Miami Marlins on July 11th. The Padres will counter with Cuban right hander Odrisamer Despaigne (2-1, 1.35 ERA), a rookie who has turned heads in his first few weeks with the big club. Despaigne took a rough loss in his last start, allowing two runs in seven innings but falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 10th.
