The New York Mets had a good holiday weekend at home, winning two out of three against the Texas Rangers. The Mets (39-49) remain ten games below the .500 mark despite their good weekend, and have only a week of games left before the All Star Break. The Mets begin their final week of the first half tonight with a four game series against the Atlanta Braves, who swept the Mets in a three game set at Turner Field just last week. The series with the Braves (49-39), who lead the Mets by 10 games in the division, is critical. Manager Terry Collins told reporters after yesterday's win over Texas that the series was "huge" for the Mets going forward.
The Mets will look to get off to a good start in the series opener tonight, with first pitch at Citi Field scheduled for 7:10 pm. The pitching matchup will be the same as when the two teams met last Tuesday in Atlanta, with Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-3, 3.72 ERA) and Mike Minor (2-5, 4.73 ERA) taking the mound. Both pitchers struggled in the contest, with Minor picking up a no decision after allowing four runs in four innings of work, but Matsuzaka took a loss after yielding five in five innings. The Mets hope the result won't be the same tonight.
