After falling 5-3 last night, the New York Mets (38-49) and Texas Rangers (38-49) have split the first two games of their three game series. The Mets won the series opener 6-5 Friday night before falling 5-3 last night. The two teams will look to win the series this afternoon in the series finale. First pitch at Citi Field is scheduled for 1:10 pm.

The Mets will send right hander Zack Wheeler (3-8, 4.25 ERA) to the mound. Wheeler took a no decision in his last outing, allowing one run in 6.1 innings in a game the Mets bullpen would blow for him on Monday night against the Atlanta Braves. The Rangers will counter with young right hander Nick Tepesch (3-3, 3.65 ERA). Tepesch picked up a win in his last outing, tossing 7.1 shutout innings to beat the Minnesota Twins on June 27th.

Pre-Game Notes:

  • The Mets placed left hander Jonathon Niese on the 15 day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. The Mets hope the DL stint can help Niese boost his stuff, as his fastball has been slower than the previous three seasons.
  • The Mets added Buddy Carlyle to their bullpen to replace Niese on the active roster.
