Mets 101 Game Preview: New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

After dropping three out of four to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Mets are in some serious danger. The Mets (37-45) have been on the fringes of playoff contention the whole season despite their struggles due to a relatively weak National League East. That may change as the two teams on top, the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals, have begun to heat up. The Mets find themselves seven games out of the division lead heading into their three game series with the Braves (44-38), making a good showing at Turner Field critical if they want to maintain any hope of an exciting summer.

The Braves are red hot, having won seven of their last 10 games. The run has moved the Braves back atop the National League East, and has them seven games ahead of the fourth place Mets. The Mets will play the Braves seven times in the next ten days, so a poor showing from the Mets could all but bury them before the All Star Break even arrives. The teams will begin a three game series tonight at Turner Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm.

The Mets will send right hander Zack Wheeler (3-8, 4.45 ERA) to the mound. Wheeler is coming off the worst start of his career, allowing six runs in two innings in a loss to the Oakland A's last Wednesday. The Braves will counter with left hander Alex Wood (6-6, 3.07 ERA), who is back in the rotation after a season ending injury to Gavin Floyd. Wood picked up a win in his last outing, tossing seven shutout innings to beat the Astros last Wednesday.
