The New York Mets are definitively heading in the wrong direction again. The Mets (36-44) have lost three games in a row, including a walkoff 3-2 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates (41-39) last night. The Mets have essentially undone the progress they made by winning five out of six games prior to the losing streak, and they will have to try and start a new one without the services of their captain for a second consecutive day. David Wright is in New York this afternoon for an MRI on his sore left shoulder, but the Mets will have to play on without him as they continue their series with the Pirates. First pitch at PNC Park is scheduled for 4:05 pm.

The Mets will send lefty Jonathon Niese (4-4, 2.78 ERA) to the mound. Niese recorded a win in his last outing, allowing three runs in six innings as the Mets blew out the Marlins 11-5 last Sunday. The Pirates will turn to talented young right hander Gerrit Cole (6-3, 3.64 ERA). Cole is making his first start since June 3rd after being on the disabled list for three weeks with shoulder fatigue.
