The last time Zack Wheeler and Josh Collmenter faced off on April 14th, Wheeler and the New York Mets picked up a victory. The Mets tried to duplicate the feat this afternoon, but Wheeler did not receive nearly the same run support he did in Arizona. Wheeler gave up only three runs on the afternoon, but the Mets scored only two. That equation led to a 3-2 victory for the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.
Wheeler (L, 1-5) was a bit of a tough luck loser here. Wheeler ran into some trouble early, giving up RBI singles to Martin Prado and Cody Ross in the second inning to give the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead. Prado added another RBI single in the third to make it 3-0, but that would be all the damage Arizona could do against Wheeler on the day. Wheeler went a season high 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out seven.
The Mets couldn't do much against Collmenter (W, 3-2), who posted a workman like six inning, two run effort. The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when a ground rule double from Curtis Granderson brought a run in, making it 3-1 in favor of Arizona. David Wright chipped into the lead again in the fifth inning with a solo home run. Wright's third home run of the year made it 3-2, capping the scoring on the day.
The story for the Mets in today's game was missed opportunities offensively. The Mets left eight men on base for the afternoon, and the team went a dreadful 2-8 with runners in scoring position. First baseman Lucas Duda was the biggest culprit, going hitless in three opportunities with men in scoring position. For a team that is having trouble scoring runs, those are huge missed opportunities and likely cost the Mets the game today.
Player of the Game:
Today's Player of the Game Award goes to Arizona third baseman Martin Prado, who went 2 for 3 and drove in two of the three Diamondback runs.
Post Game Notes:
- Arizona snapped a five game losing streak against the Mets dating back to last season.
- David Wright got three hits on the day while Curtis Granderson picked up two. The rest of the team combined for two hits.
- Addison Reed pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his 13th save of the season for the Diamondbacks.
The Mets and Diamondbacks will conclude their three game set tomorrow afternoon with a single admission doubleheader. Rafael Montero (0-2, 6.97 ERA) and Bronson Arroyo (4-3, 4.45 ERA) will start the opener, with first pitch for Game 1 scheduled for 1:10 pm. Game 2 will begin roughly thirty minutes after the first game ends and feature a pitching matchup of spot starters Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-0, 2.14 ERA) and Zeke Spruill (0-2, 5.56 ERA).Tags: Addison Reed, Arizona Diamondbacks, Baseball, Cody Ross, Curtis Granderson, David Wright, Josh Collmenter, Lucas Duda, Martin Prado, MLB, New York, New York Mets, Zack Wheeler
