Denver-The New York Mets were flying high when they arrived in Denver on Wednesday night. The Mets had just wrapped up a 15-11 April which saw them holding second place in the National League East. The Mets landed with a thud on Thursday night, when the Colorado Rockies beat them 7-4. The Mets got blasted again by the Rockies in the thin air of Denver Friday night as the Rockies (18-13) defeated the Mets (15-13) 10-3.

After the Mets grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Rockies answered back with four in the bottom of the frame. Troy Tulowitzki started the scoring with an RBI single, and Justin Morneau gave the Rockies a lead with an RBI double. An infield single by catcher Wilin Rosario brought in a run, and a sacrifice fly by Corey Dickerson made it 4-1 Colorado. Tulowitzki brought in two more in the second with a two run single, making it 6-1 Rockies.

This was all part of the worst start of Zack Wheeler's career. Wheeler (1-3, 5.13 ERA) lasted only four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out only one. Wheeler's biggest problem was a lack of control, working many deep counts and allowing the Rockies to hammer him later in at bats.

The Mets added two runs in the sixth courtesy of Curtis Granderson's second home run of the season, but the Rockies answered right back with three in the seventh. The seventh inning barrage, which came against Carlos Torres, was highlighted by outfielder Charlie Blackmon's sixth home run of the season.

Player of the Game:

Today's Player of the Game award goes to Rockies' shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Tulowitzki went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI's. Tulowitzki has killed the Mets throughout this series.

Post Game Notes:

  • Jorge De La Rosa (3-3, 5.11 ERA) gave up three runs over six innings to pick up the win for Colorado.
  • Granderson had a good day at the plate for the Mets, going 2 for 4 with the aforementioned home run. Granderson told reporters after the game that he believes he is getting close to breaking out.
  • Blackmon and Tulowitzki each recorded three hits for the Rockies.
  • The Rockies have outscored the Mets 17-7 over the first two games of the series.

What's Next:

The Mets will look to snap their two game losing streak tonight as they continue their series with the Rockies. Jenrry Mejia (3-0, 3.49 ERA) will be on the mound for the Mets. The Rockies will counter with lefty Franklin Morales (3-1, 4.40 ERA). First pitch at Coors Field is scheduled for 8:10 pm.
