The New York Mets announced Wednesday that they have added veteran relief pitcher Jose Valverde to the 40-man roster, indicating he'll make the 2014 Opening Day roster. Valverde, 36, was signed to a minor league deal in February and has made the most of his camp invite, going 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA in ten innings so far this spring.
An eleven-year MLB veteran, Valverde has posted a 26-32 record with a 3.19 ERA and 286 saves in 605 career appearances with Arizona, Houston and Detroit. It is speculated that he'll have the opportunity to close some games for the Mets, especially early in the season as incumbent closer Bobby Parnell recovers from surgery he underwent on a herniated disc last fall.Tags: Baseball, Bobby Parnell, Jose Valverde, MLB, New York, New York Mets
