When the New York Mets failed to add a new shortstop during the offseason, shortstop Ruben Tejada was expected to inherit the job. Tejada spent a large portion of the offseason at a team sponsored fitness camp to improve his conditioning, which was a problem last year when he showed up to spring training out of shape. The results of the camp have disappointed the Mets, Kevin Kernan of the New York Post reports.

Tejada, who is listed at 5'11 and 185 pounds, reportedly looks slimmer but isn't moving very well at all. Tejada's underwhelming results have led the team to consider alternatives at the position. The Stephen Drew rumors continue to churn, even though recent reports have indicated Drew may wait to sign until June so a team will not have to surrender a draft pick to obtain his services. Drew isn't the only alternative the Mets are considering though.

The Mets may talk trade with the Seattle Mariners to obtain young shortstop Nick Franklin, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports. Franklin, who turns 23 in March, hit .225 with 12 home runs and 45 RBI's in 369 at bats during his rookie campaign. Franklin is currently without a spot in the Seattle infield after the Mariners added Robinson Cano in the offseason to go with fellow top prospect Brad Miller at short. The Mets and Mariners discussed Franklin during the winter, but talks broke down over the asking price the Mariners had for Franklin.

The Mariners are reportedly seeking a young pitching prospect in return for Franklin, but the caliber of prospect remains in question. The Mets may be willing to part with an arm like Jacob DeGrom, but the Mariners are expected to seek an arm of higher quality like Jenrry Mejia, Vic Black, or Rafael Montero. The Mets have balked at that asking price so far, but it remains to be seen if Tejada struggles enough to get them to reconsider their stance.
