Matt Harvey's recovery from Tommy John surgery will be one of the biggest off the field storylines for the New York Mets this season. Even though the Mets tend to be low key with their injury updates, it will be difficult for them to keep the media's eyes off the progress of their young star ace. Harvey announced to reporters a few days ago he was cleared to begin throwing, and he got back to tossing a baseball today, MetsBlog.com reports.

Harvey threw 20 pitches on flat ground to bullpen catcher Dave Raccaniello, who was standing 60 feet away from Harvey. Harvey came out of the session feeling great, and was very encouraged by his results. Harvey told reporters,

"Everything felt absolutely amazing. I've got a lot of work to do. It's going to be a tough process with how things felt today. But I've got to stick with it and move forward."

Harvey did not say when he will throw again, but the fact that he was able to do so pain free is obviously a very good sign. Harvey is still a ways away from throwing off a mound, let alone making a rehab appearance. Harvey has set his goal towards contributing to the Mets in September, but it is a very aggressive goal that he likely won't reach. Even so, the fact that Harvey is already able to throw off a mound speaks to his bulldog mentality and hard work. Hopefully for the Mets, those qualities will remain intact whenever he takes the mound again.
