The New York Mets are still looking for the perfect mix of veteran arms to compete for jobs in spring training. After signing Kyle Farnsworth to a minor league deal last week, the Mets added veteran reliever Jose Valverde on a minor league contract, MetsBlog.com reports. Valverde will be invited to spring training, where he is expected to compete for a role in the Mets bullpen. Valverde and Farnsworth could be in competition for the same type of role, the veteran set up man job that was vacated by LaTroy Hawkins after last season.

Valverde has 296 career saves and would certainly fit the bill of Sandy Alderson's goal to add veteran relievers with closing experience. Valverde had his most success from 2010 to 2012 with the Detroit Tigers, racking up 110 saves and pitching to a 3.00 ERA while helping Detroit reach the World Series in 2012. Valverde, however, lost his closer's role in the 2012 postseason and struggled to get his mojo back after that. Valverde struggled mightily last season, pitching to a 5.59 ERA in 20 appearances before being designated for assignment.

Valverde is another good low cost addition for the Mets. With him and Farnsworth in the fold, the Mets have multiple options to close games in the event of an injury to Bobby Parnell. The Mets approach of adding multiple low cost arms to try and staff their bullpen is also a strong one, as relief pitching is the game's most unreliable quantity. The odds of a pitcher maintaing the same success from year to year as a reliever is very low, so by adding more arms the Mets have a greater chance of finding someone who will have a good year. Even though Valverde has gone through a rough patch the last year and a half, there is also a good chance the 35 year old could recapture some of the form that made him an All Star closer.
