The New York Mets officially kicked off their offseason with a major splash on Friday, signing outfielder Curtis Granderson to a four year contract worth 60 million dollars. That puts the team in position to upgrade other areas of their roster at this week's Winter Meetings, which are set to kick off tomorrow in Orlando. The Mets are expected to be active, and could set the next phase of GM Sandy Alderson's plan in motion with a trade.
The Mets are expected to actively shop both Ike Davis and Lucas Duda at the Winter Meetings, Marc Carig of Newsday reports. The Mets are looking to try and relieve some of their first base log jam at the meetings, and there has been interest in both first baseman from other teams. The Mets appear to prefer Lucas Duda internally, so the odds are higher that Davis will be dealt.
Davis, 26, struggled mightily in 2013 after hitting 32 home runs in 2012. Davis got off to another slow start and was demoted to the minor leagues in June. Upon his return Davis hit better, but ended up with only a .205 batting average and nine home runs on the year before being lost in September with an oblique injury. In spite of his struggles, Davis appears to have more trade value than Duda because of his demonstrated power. Other teams may believe that Davis' potential can be tapped with a change of scenery, expanding his market.
Teams that have shown interest in Davis this winter include the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers. Both are in need of first base help, and the Mets may look to acquire help for either their starting rotation or shortstop in return for Davis. Yunel Escobar has been floated as a potential trade target for the Mets, and he could fill two holes as a starting shortstop and leadoff hitter. Either way, the Mets are expected to be very active at the Winter Meetings.
