Reports: New York Mets Negotiating with Outfielder Curtis Granderson

The hot stove season has taken on a life of its own in the last 24 hours. Multiple trades have been made and the New York Yankees made a huge splash by signing one of the top free agents, outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, to a seven year contract worth 153 million dollars. The New York Mets are keeping busy as well, as multiple reports indicate that the team is pushing to complete a deal with free agent outfielder Curtis Granderson.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman has reported that the Mets and Granderson have been discussing contracts over the last day, with the Mets seeking a three year deal while Granderson has sought a five year deal. The two sides could compromise on a four year deal, which GM Sandy Alderson would like to avoid if at all possible. The Mets, however, may be willing to go to four years if it is necessary to secure Granderson's services.

The Mets would be wise to act fast, as reports indicate that the Boston Red Sox could look to Granderson as an option after losing Ellsbury to the Yankees yesterday. The Sox, however, aren't willing to go to four years, which may be the Mets' ticket to landing the outfielder they clearly want. If the Mets add Granderson, he would likely play left field and hit cleanup behind David Wright in the Mets' lineup. Juan Lagares and Chris Young would complete the Mets' outfield, allowing the team to potentially move Eric Young to second base and flip either Daniel Murphy or Ike Davis for help at shortstop or in the starting rotation. Clearly, however, Granderson would need to be the first domino to fall for this potential offseason plan to work. Stay tuned here at Mets for all the latest news on the Mets' pursuit of Granderson.
