Santana carried that momentum into 2009, going 8-3 with a 2.43 ERA, which got him back into the Mid-Summer Classic, for the first time as a National Leaguer. The new Busch Stadium in St. Louis played host to the game and Johan was one of four Mets on the squad, joined by starting third baseman David Wright, Carlos Beltran and closer Francisco Rodriguez. Santana did not appear in the contest as the National League used eight pitchers en route to a 4-3 loss to the American League, the seventh consecutive win for the AL.
Following the All-Star Break, Santana pitched his way to a finishing line of 13-9 with a 3.13 ERA but the season didn't end well, as he went on the 15-day disabled list on August 25 and would later undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his pitching elbow.
