The New York Mets have seen their first free agent defection of the winter. Reliever Greg Burke, who was outrighted off the 40 man roster several weeks ago, has signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports. Burke, 31, rode the Las Vegas shuttle for most of the 2013 season. Burke finished the season with an 0-3 record with a 5.68 ERA in 32 appearances for the Mets.

Burke received offers from the Mets and Toronto Blue Jays before ultimately deciding to sign with the Rockies. Burke, who had signed a minor league deal with the Mets prior to the 2012 season, receives a new one with Colorado now. Burke also will receive an invitation to spring training, giving him an opportunity to earn a spot in the Rockies' bullpen this spring. Along with Burke's decision, there have been a few other early free agency headlines involving the Mets.

  • LaTroy Hawkins told MLB Network Radio's Jim Duquette that he has already received two offers in free agency. The New York Daily News' Kristie Ackert also reports that one of those offers is from the Mets.
  • Mike Puma of the New York Post is reporting that the Mets are among a dozen teams interested in Milwaukee Brewers' outfielder/first baseman Corey Hart. Hart missed the entire 2013 season with a pair of knee injuries, but is a career .276 hitter.
  • Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reports that the Mets "love" Detroit Tigers' shortstop Jhonny Peralta. Davidoff predicts the Mets will end up signing Peralta, Curtis Granderson, and Phil Hughes as well as re-signing Hawkins.
