Two of the most popular trade targets this winter appear to be Colorado Rockies' shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and Miami Marlins' outfielder Giancarlo Stanton. The two players appeared to be on the market for one reason: the team's finances. Tulowitzki signed a lucrative contract extension recently, and the Rockies were believed to be willing to explore a trade to get salary relief and begin a rebuild of the franchise. Stanton is arbitration eligible for the first time this winter, and given the Marlins' allergy to paying anyone market value the expectation was that he would be shopped this winter. According to executives for both teams, however, that no longer appears to be the case.
Citing a report from Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio, MetsBlog.com is reporting that Rockies' Senior Vice President Bill Geivett indicated that the team does not plan on trading Tulowitzki this winter. The report, which came from an interview by Bowden, indicates that the Rockies intend to build their team around Tulowitzki going forward. The same interview did not address some of the other Colorado players who could be on the move, including outfielders Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler, and Michael Cuddyer.
As far as Stanton, he does not appear to be going anywhere either. Bowden is reporting on Twitter that Marlins' General Manager Dan Jennings denied rumors that the team will shop their star right fielder. Jennings told Bowden,
"Mr. Stanton is not available. He will be in RF at Marlins Park on Opening Day. We are building around him."
While the reports indicate neither player is available this winter, they may simply be posturing. If the Mets (or any team for that matter) made an offer that the Marlins or Rockies could not refuse, either Stanton or Tulowitzki could be had. Either way, the price for either of these star players will be over the moon, so it is very possible that Alderson looks to acquire a lesser caliber talent via trade to try and protect some of his young assets.
